INTRODUCTION

Thank you for selecting the finest batch control system available. The Intellifaucet Batch and Temperature Control System is a unique product which not only delivers accurate batches of water, but controls water temperature as well. A remote connection allows for external temperature setpoint, and remote batch start and stop.

This manual provides you with instructions on how to install, operate, calibrate, maintain and repair the Intellifaucet. Drawings are provided to clarify the text.

If you have any questions or suggestions not covered in this manual, please contact Hass Manufacturing Company (HMC).

INSTALLATION

Requirements

The Intellifaucet is mounted to a wall bracket. Adequate supplies of hot and cold water must be provided. Impure water must be filtered. Do not connect the output of the Intellifaucet to a closed system without using an anti-siphon vacuum breaker.

The Intellifaucet uses 115 or 230 Volts AC, 50-60 hz electric supply. A switch is provided on the power supply for selecting the proper line voltage. This switch is set at the factory for 115 Volts. The unit draws a maximum of 0.2 A at 115 volts, (0.1 A at 230 volts), for a maximum power consumption of 23 Watts.

Mechanical Connections

The recommended layout of the supplies for the Intellifaucet is shown in Figure 1.

There must be a minimum of 1/2 inch between the back of the Intellifaucet and the wall. Adequate air flow is required to allow heat to escape from the inside of the Intellifaucet's enclosure.

Figure 1. - Recommended layout of supplies for installation of the Intellifaucet

The Intellifaucet is shipped mounted to the wall bracket. Fasteners are supplied to attach the wall bracket to wood or masonry walls.

  1. Prepare mounting surface, attach wall bracket and attach Intellifaucet to the bracket.
  2. Connect pipe fittings to the Intellifaucet valves. HOT IS ON THE LEFT; COLD IS ON THE RIGHT.
  3. Connect the outlet to the flowmeter. Provide adequate mechanical support for the flowmeter.
  4. Close valves and slowly pressurize the system checking all connections for leaks.
  5. Flush air from the system by slowly opening the valves.
  6. After the air is flushed from the system, gently close the Intellifaucet's valves by hand.
Electrical Connections - Power

  1. Place the Intellifaucet power supply in a dry place.
  2. Plug the AC cord into a GROUNDED OUTLET EQUIPPED WITH A GROUND FAULT INTERRUPTER.
  3. Plug the 12 V cord into the power supply and into the hole in the bottom rear of the Intellifaucet's enclosure.

Electrical Connections - Remote Control

On the left side of the Intellifaucet cover is a 7-pin circular connector. The mating cable connector is supplied with each unit.

The pin connections are as follows:

    A = + 4-20 mA remote temperature signal in.
B = - 4-20 mA remote temperature signal out.
C = Remote Start New Batch.
D = Remote Stop.
E = Digital Ground.
F = Flowmeter 9 V DC power.
G = Flowmeter pulse signal.

The 4-20 mA temperature setpoint connection presents a 250 Ohm load to the current source. The circuit has no provision for calibration. The remote Start New Batch and Stop signals require a momentary switch closure of at least 50 milliseconds. 9 V DC, 10 mA power is supplied by the Intellifaucet for a flowmeter transistor switch. Diagrams of the connections appear in Figures 3-5.

Figure 3. 4-20 mA remote temperature signal circuit diagram.

Figure 4. Start and stop button circuit diagram.

Figure 5. Flowmeter connections.

The recommended switch configuration for the remote Start New Batch and the remote Stop functions appears in Figure 6.

Figure 6. Recommended switch layout for start and stop control.

Remote Temperature Setpoint Scaling Equations

The 4-20 mA remote temperature setpoint signal is scaled to Fahrenheit degrees according to equations 1 and 2. There is no adjustment for these values.

To convert mA to degrees F:

Degrees F = 9.2 * mA - 1.3 ± 1.4 °F   ( Equation 1 )

To convert degrees F to mA:

mA = 0.11 * degrees F + 0.14 ± .2 mA   ( Equation 2 )

OPERATION

Manual control

You can use the Intellifaucet as a precision manual faucet when the power is off. Both knobs rotate counter-clockwise to open (looking from above) and clockwise to close. Only modest tightening is needed for a tight connection. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. Over-tightening can cause the motors driving the valves to stall.

Turning the Intellifaucet On

The power switch is mounted on the rear panel of the power supply. Set this switch to the ON position. The valves will close and then a short beep should be heard from the Intellifaucet. This indicates that the Intellifaucet is operating properly.

Operating the Intellifaucet

MAKE CERTAIN THE VALVES ARE CLOSED. The Intellifaucet turns the water on by itself. Pressing START causes the valves to open, allowing temperature-controlled water to flow. STOP causes the valves to close. Pressing START NEW BATCH causes the valves to open and starts a batch operation. The valves will close at the end of the batch. Key functions are described in the key to Figure 4 and in the reference section.

The control panel is comprised of displays, i.e., four LED status lamps and a numerical display; and a keypad. The displays and keys are numbered in Figure 7 and described in the notes to Figure 7.

Examples

Try these examples to get started with the Intellifaucet.

Example 1. You need some fresh water at 105 degrees F. Turn the power switch on the power supply on. Press and hold TEMP UP. When the display reads 105.0, release the key. Now press START. When you want to turn the water off, press STOP.

REFERENCE SECTION

R.1 HOW IT WORKS

You do not need to know how the Intellifaucet works to use it. Here is a short explanation for the curious (Figure R.1).

The Intellifaucet mixes hot and cold water like an ordinary faucet. The Intellifaucet measures the output water temperature and adjusts the faucet valves. This process is repeated over and over. After a short time period, the water temperature is the same as the temperature you selected.

When running a batch, the Intellifaucet counts pulses from a flowmeter. When the number of pulses is close to the quantity selected, the Intellifaucet closes its valves gradually to a low flow. When the number of pulses reaches the batch setting, the valves shut off.

Figure R.1 Block Diagram of the Intellifaucet System

R 2. INTELLIFAUCET FUNCTIONS

The Intellifaucet Batch System performs two primary functions, temperature control and batch control, and one secondary function, flow volume control.

Temperature Control

The Intellifaucet delivers constant temperature flowing water by mixing hot and cold supplies. The unit operates in two modes, standby and control. All keyboard parameters may be adjusted in both the standby and the control modes.

Standby mode

In the standby mode, the Intellifaucet is used as a faucet with a built-in digital thermometer. You can rotate the knobs on the top of the Intellifaucet to open and close the valves like a typical faucet.

Control mode

In the control mode, the Intellifaucet is used as an automatic water temperature controller. The control mode is activated when either the START or START TIMER keys is pressed. The valves automatically open allowing water to flow, the Intellifaucet reads the temperature and adjusts the valves. You can press STOP at any time to return to the standby mode.

Flow volume selection

Flow volume from 20 to 100 per cent of full flow can be selected using the FLOW keys. Actual flow rates (gallons per minute, kilograms per second) will vary according to the supply pressure.

Batch Control

The batch control function causes a user-specified quantity of tempered water to flow. Five keys are dedicated to the batch functions. The BATCH UP and BATCH DOWN keys adjust the batch quantity. Pressing the SHOW BATCH SETTING key causes the display to show the batch setting.

The START NEW BATCH key activates a batch operation. The valves will open and water will flow if this key is pressed when the valves are closed. The display will show the batch total during the batch in the currently selected units. Water flow will continue until the total quantity of water flow is close to the batch setting. Then the Intellifaucet gradually reduces the flow rate until the batch quantity reaches the batch setting. Then the valves close. The STOP key cancels the batch and closes the valves. If the water is running when the START NEW BATCH key is pressed, then the batch simply starts the batch and will shut down the flow when the flow quantity equals the batch setting. The SHOW TEMP key causes the display to briefly show the actual water temperature during a batch.

A batch operation can be paused by pressing the Pause Batch / Resume Batch key. The valves will close but the display will continue to show the batch total. To continue batching, press the key again.

Units Selection

There are two keys which control the units displayed. The English/Metric key selects units from one of these two systems. The English units are Fahrenheit degrees for temperature, U.S. gallons for batch volume quantity, and pounds for batch weight quantity. The Metric units are Celsius degrees, liters and kilograms.

The Volume/Weight key causes the display to toggle between weight units and volume units.

The conversion factors are listed in Section R.3.2.

R.3 THE DISPLAYS

There are two parts to the display; the numerical LED display and the 4 red LED status lamps.

The Numerical LED Display

The default-mode of the seven-segment display shows the current temperature of the water contacting the temperature probe inside the faucet, whether the water is running or not. During a batch, the default mode changes to show the total water flow during the current batch.

The display changes whenever the keypad is pressed. When a key is pressed, the display changes to show the value of the setting associated with that key. The display will return to displaying the default value 3 seconds after any key is released. The following table shows the setting displayed when a key is pressed.

Information Displayed Key Pressed
Actual temperature none, English/Metric, Volume/Weight, Pause/Resume Batch, STOP
Temperature Setpoint TEMP UP, TEMP DOWN, Show Temp Setpoint, Show Temp, START
Flow Setting FLOW UP, FLOW DOWN, Show Flow Setting
Batch Setting BATCH UP, BATCH DOWN, START NEW BATCH, Show Batch Setting
Batch Quantity none, English/Metric, Volume/Weight, Pause/Resume Batch, STOP

The Status Lamps

There are four LED status lamps. Two lamps show the batch mode, while the other two show which unit is being used.

The BATCH ACTIVE lamp is on when the batch is operative. The BATCH PAUSE lamp is on when an active batch is paused.

The METRIC UNITS lamp is on when temperature units and batch quantity units are being displayed in metric scales. These units are Celsius degrees for temperature, liters for batch volume and kilograms for batch weight. The METRIC UNITS lamp is off when English units are displayed (Fahrenheit degrees, gallons and pounds).

The WEIGHT UNITS lamp is on when the batch quantity is displayed in weight units, pounds for English units and kilograms for metric. When the lamp is off, volume units are displayed (gallons and liters)

The conversion factors used in the Intellifaucet are:

1 U.S. gallon = 3.7854 liters
1 U.S. gallon weighs 8.34 lbs
1 liter weighs 1 kilogram

There is a display table printed on the keypad to the right of the 7 segment display which identifies which units are being displayed with different combinations of the METRIC UNITS and the WEIGHT UNITS lamps.

R.4 THE KEYPAD

The Intellifaucet keypad features 16 touch-keys. Each key is designated to carry out a unique function.

R.4.1 Start, Stop and Start New Batch Keys

The control mode of the Intellifaucet is activated by pressing the START key. It is not necessary to open the valves manually; they will open automatically and water will begin to flow. Pressing the STOP key will cause the valves to close and the flow of water will be stopped. The batch function can be activated by pressing the START NEW BATCH key.

R.4.2 Show Keys

The "SHOW" keys display the temperature setpoint, flow setting or batch setting. The display will return to the current default value three seconds after releasing any of these keys.

R.4.3 Up/Down Keys

The six UP/DOWN keys increase or decrease the temperature setpoint, the flow setting and the batch setting. These keys have an arrow symbol and a word on their label. The temperature setpoint changes in 0.1 degree steps and the flow setting changes in 1 per cent steps. The batch setting changes in 1/10 unit step for gallons, liters and kilograms and 1 unit steps for pounds.

The Up/Down keys can be operated in four modes: the single step mode, the slow repeat mode, the fast repeat mode and the very fast repeat mode.

  1. Single step mode. Pushing and releasing a key will change the setting by one step.
  2. Slow repeat mode. Holding a key for more than 1/2 second causes the setting to increase by 10 steps per second.
  3. Fast repeat mode. Holding the TEMP or BATCH keys for more than 2 1/2 seconds changes the setting by 60 steps per second. The FLOW keys do not have a fast repeat mode.
  4. Very fast repeat mode. Holding the TEMP or BATCH keys for more than 4 seconds changes the setting by 600 steps per second. The FLOW keys do not have a very fast repeat mode.

R.4.4 Pause Batch / Resume Batch Key

The PAUSE BATCH/RESUME BATCH key operates only when a batch is active. When this key is pressed, the valves will close and the BATCH PAUSE lamp will turn on. The Intellifaucet will continue to read the flowmeter input. If the valves are opened manually while a batch is paused, the batch total will continue to accumulate. When the PAUSE BATCH/RESUME BATCH key is pressed again, the valves will open and the batch will remain active until the proper amount of water is delivered.

R.4.5 Units Keys

The English/Metric key causes the display to change between the different measuring systems while the Volume/Weight key changes the display from volume units to weight units and back. Both of these functions are fully explained in Section R.3.2.

R.5 MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

Under normal use the Intellifaucet does not require maintenance.

Seat seal replacement

The seat seals are made from 25% glass-filled Teflon (TM DuPont). The seals should last for many years. Tests indicate that the seals will last for at least five years without failing. Replacing the seals is a difficult job. HMC will repair the unit if so desired. Contact us to arrange for servicing and servicing charges. Step by step instructions are included for disassembling the unit and replacing the seat seals (see pages 16-18 for instruction).

To replace the seat seals, you must disassemble the Intellifaucet. No special tools are required, however, you will need a Phillips screwdriver and assorted open end or adjustable wrenches. Additional technical support is available from HMC.

The seat seals and plunger are replaced as a unit called the plunger assembly . When replacing the plunger assemblies, replace the stem seal O-rings . New plunger assemblies and O-rings are available from HMC.

Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.

NOTE: MAKE SURE SEAT SEAL IS NOT SEATED WHEN TIGHTENING BONNET.

Temperature Calibration

The Intellifaucet is calibrated at the factory. However, re-calibration may be needed since the characteristics of electronic components can change with time. Check the Intellifaucet's accuracy at least once per year to determine if re-calibration is needed.

There are two potentiometers (pots) which adjust the Gain and Zero of the voltage generated by the temperature sensor. The Gain (G) pot increases the amplification of the temperature signal voltage. Therefore, it changes errors at higher temperatures more than errors at lower temperatures. The Zero (Z) pot adjusts an offset voltage which is added to the voltage from the temperature sensor thereby affecting higher and lower temperatures equally.

Calibration should be done in a draft-free area. Drafts will affect the accuracy of the calibration.

  1. Remove the Intellifaucet cover. While lifting the cover up, disconnect the remote control cable from the header on the printed circuit board and carefully snake it through while pulling the cover up and to the left. Loosen the front panel screws to make it easier to remove the cable.
  2. Set a 16 ounce container so that the outlet of the Intellifaucet fills the container and spills over into a drain.
  3. Place a reference thermometer in the 16 ounce container.
  4. Set the Intellifaucet for 68 degrees F. Press START.
  5. Wait 2-5 minutes. Read and record the reference temperature.
  6. Set the Intellifaucet for 102 degrees F. Press START.
  7. Wait 2-5 minutes. Read and record the reference temperature.
  8. Set up a table as follows: (example values)

T setpoint T actual Difference ( T actual - T setpoint)
70.0 69.2 -0.8
105.0 104.1 -0.9

There are four possible cases.

Case 1. Both differences equal 0. The unit is calibrated.

Case 2. Both differences are equal, but not equal to 0. Adjust as follows:

Rotate the Z pot approximately 0.8 degrees F per rotation. Rotate clockwise to raise the actual temperature, counterclockwise to lower it. Start over at Step 4 until results lead to Case 1.

Case 3. The difference at the higher temperature is more positive than the difference at the lower temperature. Adjust as follows:

Rotate the G pot screw clockwise up to three rotations. Start over at Step 4 until results lead to Case 2.

Case 4. The difference at the lower temperature is more positive than the difference at the higher temperature. Adjust as follows:

Rotate the G pot screw counter clockwise up to three rotations. Start over at Step 4 until results lead to Case 2.

Repeat calibration as needed.

Fuse replacement

There are two fuses in the 1043 power supply. (The 10741 Power Adaptor does not have replaceable fuses. You must replace the power adaptor.) To replace a fuse follow these steps.

  1. DISCONNECT AC POWER CORD.
  2. Remove power supply cover.
  3. Pry out the fuses and replace with the same rating new fuse.

The fuse near the on/off switch is a 1 amp normal blow 3AG fuse. The other fuse is a 3 amp slow blow 3AG fuse. Replacing with incorrect values could cause safety problems or premature failure and will void the warranty. If the fuses blow repeatedly, some other problem may exist and the device should be serviced. See the troubleshooting section.
