Thank you for selecting the finest water temperature control
This manual provides you with instructions on how to install,
operate, calibrate, maintain and repair the Intellifaucet. Drawings
are provided to clarify the text.
If you have any questions or suggestions not covered in this
manual, please contact Hass Manufacturing Company (HMC).
The Intellifaucet is mounted to a wall bracket. Adequate supplies
of hot and cold water must be provided. Impure water must be
filtered. Do not connect the output of the Intellifaucet to a
closed system without using an anti-siphon vacuum breaker.
The Intellifaucet uses 115 or 230 Volts AC, 50-60 hz electric
supply. A switch is provided on the power supply for selecting
the proper line voltage. This switch is set at the factory for
115 Volts. The unit draws a maximum of 0.2 A at 115 volts, (0.1
A at 230 volts), for a maximum power consumption of 23 Watts.
The recommended layout of the supplies for the Intellifaucet
is shown in Figure 1.
There must be a minimum of 1/2 inch between the back of the Intellifaucet
and the wall. Adequate air flow is required to allow heat to
escape from the inside of the Intellifaucet's enclosure.

The Intellifaucet is shipped mounted to the wall bracket. Fasteners
are supplied to attach the wall bracket to wood or masonry walls.
Step 1. Prepare mounting surface, attach wall bracket and attach
Intellifaucet to the bracket.
Step 2. Connect pipe fittings to the Intellifaucet valves. HOT
IS ON THE LEFT; COLD IS ON THE RIGHT.
Step 3. Connect the pipe fitting to the outlet.
Step 4. Close valves and slowly pressurize the system checking
all connections for leaks.
Step 5. Flush air from the system by slowly opening the valves.
Step 6. After the air is flushed from the system, gently close
the Intellifaucet's valves by hand.
Plug the 12 V cord into the hole in the bottom rear of the Intellifaucet's enclosure.
You can use the Intellifaucet as a precision manual faucet when
the power is off. Both knobs rotate counter-clockwise to open
(looking from above) and clockwise to close. Only modest tightening
is needed for a tight connection. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. Over-tightening
can cause the motors driving the valves to stall.
Turning the Intellifaucet On
The power switch is mounted on the rear panel of the 1043 power supply.
The 10731 Power Adaptor is always on.
Set the switch to the ON position, if available. The valves will close and
then a short beep should be heard from the Intellifaucet. This
indicates that the Intellifaucet is operating properly.
Operating the Intellifaucet
MAKE CERTAIN THE VALVES ARE CLOSED. The Intellifaucet turns the
water on by itself. Pressing START causes the valves to open,
allowing temperature-controlled water to flow. STOP causes the
valves to close. All key functions are described in the notes
to Figure 4. Additional information about the function and operation
of the keys is presented in the reference section.
The control panel is comprised of displays, i.e., four LED status
lamps and a numerical display; and a keypad. The displays and
keys are numbered and the function of each is described in Figure
Try these examples to get used to the system.
Example 1. You need some fresh water at 105 degrees F. Turn the
power switch on the power supply on. Press and hold TEMP UP.
When the display reads 105, release the key. Now press START.
When you want to turn the water off, press STOP.
Example 2. To wash some film, a photographer needs 68.0 degree
water running for 5 minutes. Turn the power switch on the power
supply on. Press and hold TEMP DOWN. Press START TIMER. The Intellifaucet
will shut off the water in 5 minutes. If you want to stop earlier,

3. CELSIUS Indicates the temperature scale. When the light is
off, the scale is Fahrenheit and when on, the scale is Celsius.

13. TEMP UP Increases the temperature setpoint from the current

panel. Press again to restore the lights. Deactivates all keys
except START, STOP and LIGHTS ON/LIGHTS OFF.
17. AUTO SHUT OFF Activates the auto shut off mode. Pressing
this key again deactivates the auto shut off mode.
18. °F/°C Changes the temperature display to degrees
Celsius. Press again to show degrees Fahrenheit.
HOW IT WORKS
You do not need to know how the Intellifaucet works to use it.
Here is a short explanation for the curious (Figure R.1).
The Intellifaucet mixes hot and cold water like an ordinary faucet.
The Intellifaucet measures the output water temperature and adjusts
the faucet valves. This process is repeated over and over. After
a short time period, the water temperature is the same as the
temperature you selected.

R.2 INTELLIFAUCET FUNCTIONS
The Intellifaucet performs one primary function, temperature
control, and two secondary functions, flow volume control and
flow duration control.
The Intellifaucet delivers constant temperature flowing water
by mixing hot and cold supplies. The unit operates in two modes,
standby and control. All keyboard parameters may be adjusted
in both the standby and the control modes.
In the standby mode, the Intellifaucet is used as a faucet with
a built-in digital thermometer. You can rotate the knobs on the
top of the Intellifaucet to open and close the valves like a
In the control mode, the Intellifaucet is used as an automatic
water temperature controller. The control mode is activated when
either the START or START TIMER keys is pressed. The valves automatically
open allowing water to flow, the Intellifaucet reads the temperature
and adjusts the valves. You can press STOP at any time to return
to the standby mode.
Flow volume selection
Flow volume from 20 to 100 per cent of full flow can be selected
using the FLOW keys. Actual flow rates (gallons per minute, kilograms
per second) will vary according to the supply pressure.
Timer - Flow duration
The timer can be set to shut off the flow of water after a user
specified time period ranging from one minute to four hours.
Five keys are dedicated to the timer functions. The TIMER UP
and TIMER DOWN keys adjust the length of time the Intellifaucet
is to stay on. Pressing the SHOW TIMER SETTING key causes the
display to show the timer setting. The START TIMER key activates
the timer starting the countdown. The valves will open and water
will flow if this key is pressed when the valves are closed.
Water flow will continue until the timer expires. The STOP key
overrides the timer. If the water is running when the START TIMER
key is pressed, then the timer simply starts the countdown and
will shut down the flow when the timer expires. The SHOW TIME
LEFT key causes the display to show the amount of time left in
the countdown. This key works only when the timer is active.
Pressing START TIMER while the timer is running simply resets
the count to the timer setting value and counts down from there.
This allows you to run water for longer than the maximum time
interval of four hours without shutting off the water. The following
example illustrates this technique.
Example: You want to run water without interrupting the flow
at 68.0° F for 7 hours and 50 minutes.
Press TIMER UP until it reaches 4-00. This means 4 hours and
0 minutes. Press START TIMER. When 3 hours and 50 minutes has
expired press START TIMER again. This resets the count to 4 hours.
Therefore, the water runs for a total of 3:50 + 4:00 or 7 hours,
Temperature scale selection
The °F/°C mode key causes the display to toggle between
the Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales.
R.3 THE DISPLAYS
There are two parts to the display; the numerical LED display
and the 4 red LED status lamps.
The Numerical LED Display
The default-mode of the seven-segment display indicates the current
temperature of the water contacting the temperature probe inside
the faucet, whether the water is running or not.
The display changes whenever the keyboard is pressed. When a
key is pressed, the display changes to show the value of the
parameter associated with that key. The display will return to
displaying the temperature 3 seconds after any key is released
except when the SHOW TIME LEFT key has been pressed. The time
remaining on the timer will be displayed until this key is pressed
a second time. The temperature will then be displayed. The following
table shows the parameter displayed when a key is pressed.

The Status Lamps
The status lamps indicate what mode the Intellifaucet is in during
a particular operation. The POWER light indicates the power is
on. The CELSIUS light indicates the temperature is being displayed
in degree Celsius units not Fahrenheit. The TIMER ACTIVE light
indicates the timer is operative. The AUTO SHUT OFF light indicates
the auto shut off function has been activated.
R.4 THE KEYPAD
The Intellifaucet keypad features 16 touch-keys. Each key is
designated to carry out a unique function.
The control mode of the Intellifaucet is activated by pressing
the START key. It is not necessary to open the valves manually;
they will open automatically and water will begin to flow. Pressing
the STOP key will cause the valves to close and the flow of water
will be stopped. The timer function can be activated by pressing
the START TIMER key. The default time setting is 5 minutes and
the Intellifaucet will begin counting down from this setting
unless the timer setting has been changed by using the TIMER
UP and TIMER DOWN keys. After the selected time interval has
expired the valves will close automatically and the flow of water
The function of the four "SHOW" keys is to display
the setpoint or setting of the temperature, flow and timer. The
display will return to the current temperature value three seconds
after releasing any of these keys, except for the SHOW TIME LEFT
key. To return the display to the temperature, this key must
be pressed a second time.
Six keys operate like knobs. These keys are TEMP UP, TEMP DOWN,
FLOW UP, FLOW DOWN, TIMER UP, and TIMER DOWN. Pushing and holding
one of these keys is analogous to rotating a volume control knob
on a radio. These six keys allow the user to increase or decrease
the temperature setpoint and the flow and timer settings. The
temperature changes in 0.1 degree F steps, the flow in 1 per
cent steps and the timer in 1 minute steps. All six of these
keys has an arrow symbol and a word on its label.
These knob-like keys can be operated in three modes; the single
step mode, the slow repeat mode and the fast repeat mode.
Single step mode. Pushing and releasing a key will change the
parameter by one step.
Slow repeat mode. Holding a key for more than 1/2 second causes
the parameter to increase by 10 units per second.
Fast repeat mode. Holding the TEMP or TIMER keys for more than
2 1/2 seconds changes the parameter by 60 units per second. The
FLOW keys do not have a fast repeat mode.
The "LIGHTS ON/LIGHTS OFF" key turns the display LED's
on or off. When the lamps are turned off, no light is emitted
from the Intellifaucet, permitting the Intellifaucet to be used
in light sensitive environments, such as photographic darkrooms.
The AUTO SHUTOFF key enables the user to instruct the Intellifaucet
to respond to problem conditions in one of two ways - ring an
alarm or shut off the flow of water. The auto shutoff is inactive
when the Intellifaucet is first turned on. The auto shutoff is
activated and deactivated by pressing the Auto Shutoff key.
When the auto shutoff is inactive, the Intellifaucet warns you
if it can not keep the temperature at the setpoint temperature
by causing the Intellifaucet's built-in speaker to beep. While
beeping, the Intellifaucet remains in the control mode. The beeping
stops when either the user presses STOP or when the hot water
supply temperature recovers (for example) so that it exceeds
the setpoint temperature. When the Auto Shutoff feature is active,
the Intellifaucet closes the valves, returning to the standby
mode, if it can not keep the temperature at the user-selected
setpoint temperature. The unit will then remain in the standby
mode until you press the START or START TIMER key.
The °F/°C key causes the display to change between the
Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales. The Fahrenheit scale
is displayed when the Intellifaucet is initially turned on.
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
Under normal use the Intellifaucet does not require maintenance.
Seat seal replacement
The seat seals are made from 25% glass-filled Teflon (TM DuPont).
The seals should last for many years. Tests indicate that the
seals will last for at least five years without failing. Replacing
the seals is a difficult job. HMC will repair the unit if so
desired. Contact us to arrange for servicing and servicing charges.
Step by step instructions are included for disassembling the
unit and replacing the seat seals (see pages 16-18 for instruction).
To replace the seat seals, you must disassemble the Intellifaucet.
No special tools are required, however, you will need a Phillips
screwdriver and assorted open end or adjustable wrenches. Additional
technical support is available from HMC.
The seat seals and plunger are replaced as a unit called the
plunger assembly . When replacing the plunger assemblies, replace
the stem seal O-rings . New plunger assemblies and O-rings are
available from HMC.
Disassembling the Intellifaucet
To disassemble the Intellifaucet, you must remove the cover,
circuit boards, and the motor assembly. Then you can open up
the faucet and remove and replace the parts as needed. Reference
numbers in parentheses correspond to the numbers in Figure R.2.

Removing the cover
Step 1. Turn off the power supply and disconnect the Intellifaucet
from the power supply.
Step 2. Turn off the water supplied to the Intellifaucet.
Step 3. Open the valves one rotation by rotating the knobs (#1)
counterclockwise as seen from above.
Step 4. While holding the knobs (#1), remove the knob retaining
Step 5. Lift the knobs (#1) straight up and set aside.
Step 6. Remove the 6 cover screws (NS).
Step 7. Gently lift the cover (NS) straight up. Avoid damaging
the front panel gasket (NS).
Removing the circuit boards
Step 8. Remove the two screws (NS) holding the front panel (NS)
to the base. These screws are located on the underside of the

circuit board (NS).
Step 10. Gently disconnect the thermocouple plug (NS) (bright
Step 11. Pull the front panel forward and away from the unit
and set aside.
Step 12. Remove the two screws holding the rear panel (NS) to
the base (#25).
Removing the motor assembly
Step 13. Remove the 2 faucet-base retaining nuts (#11).
Step 14. Gently lift the base (#25) off the faucet (#19) and

Step 15. Loosen the bonnet (#13).
Step 16. Remove the bonnet (#13). While unscrewing the bonnet,
hold the stem (#17) stationary to prevent it from jamming up
against the underside of the bonnet. The stem assembly is removed
with the bonnet.
Step 17. Unscrew the plunger assembly (#20) from the stem (#17).
This is a left hand thread.
Replacing the O-rings
Step 18. Loosen the coupling (#9) set screws and remove the coupling
from the stem (#17).
Step 19. Remove the stem (#17) from the bonnet (#13) exposing
the O-ring (#15) inside.
Step 20. Replace the O-ring (#15) with a fresh one. Lubricate
the O-ring with Parker Super O Lube or equivalent (silicon-based
grease) when assembling.
Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.
NOTE: MAKE SURE SEAT SEAL IS NOT SEATED WHEN TIGHTENING BONNET.
The Intellifaucet is calibrated at the factory. However, re-calibration
may be needed since the characteristics of electronic components
can change with time. Check the Intellifaucet's accuracy at least
once per year to determine if re-calibration is needed.
The tools necessary for calibration include a reference thermometer
accurate to 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit, a 16 ounce (1 liter) container
and a small screwdriver.
Two adjustments are made to calibrate the unit. Located on the
right-hand side of the front circuit board are an 8-switch DIP
switch and a 15-turn variable resistor (pot). Use the small screwdriver
to change the switch settings and/or rotate the pot screw.
Step 1. Remove the cover and set the dip switches to 00000000.
0 is to the right, 1 is to the left.
Step 2. Direct the output water into the container with the reference
Step 3. Select two temperatures reasonably far apart, such as
68.0 F and 102.0 F.
Step 4. Set the Intellifaucet for the lower temperature.
Step 5. Set the flow to 50 to 100%.
Step 6. Press START.
Step 7. Wait until the temperature stabilizes, about 2-5 minutes.
Step 8. Record the setpoint temperature and the reference temperature
of the water in the container.
Step 9. Set the Intellifaucet for the second temperature and
Step 10. Wait until stable, about 2-5 minutes.
Step 11. Record the setpoint and actual temperatures.

There are four possible cases.
Case 1: Both differences equal 0. The unit is calibrated.
Case 2: Both differences are equal, but not equal to 0.

NOTE: This only applies to the 1043 Power Supply (stainless steel case). The 10731 AC Power Adaptor (black plastic case)
does not have replaceable fuses. The entire power adaptor must be replaced.
There are two fuses in the power supply. To replace a fuse follow
Step 1. DISCONNECT AC POWER CORD.
Step 2. Remove power supply cover.
Step 3. Pry out the fuses and replace with the same rating new
The fuse near the on/off switch is a 1 amp normal blow 3AG fuse.
The other fuse is a 3 amp slow blow 3AG fuse. Replacing with
incorrect values could cause safety problems or premature failure
and will void the warranty. If the fuses blow repeatedly, some
other problem may exist and the device should be serviced. See
the troubleshooting section.
The following chart indicates symptoms, causes and what to do
about them. If a problem exists which is not listed in the chart,
contact HMC. We will help you to solve the problem as quickly

The Intellifaucet "RK" remote models feature a remote control interface
for starting the flow of water, terminating the flow of water,
and adjusting the setpoint temperature from a remote control
panel, switchboard, programmable logic controller, or process
and Electrical Connections
On the left side of the Intellifaucet cover is an Amphenol
model MS-3102A-16S-8S 5-pin circular connector. The mating cable
connector can be any one of Amphenol models MS-3106 A or B-,
MS-3107 A or B-, MS-3108 A or B-16S-8s 5-pin circular mating

- A = + 4-20 mA remote temperature signal in.
- B = - 4-20 mA remote temperature signal out.
- C = Remote start +5 V out.
- D = Remote stop +5 V out.
- E = Remote start and remote stop +5 V return.

The 4-20 mA temperature setpoint connection presents a 250
Ohm load to the current source. The circuit has no provision
for calibration. The remote start and stop signals require a
momentary switch closure of at least 50 milliseconds. Schematic
diagrams of the connections appear in Figures 2 and 3.

The recommended switch configuration for the remote start
and the remote stop functions appears in Figure 4.

Remote Temperature Setpoint
The 4-20 mA remote temperature setpoint signal is scaled to
Fahrenheit degrees according to the following equations:
To convert mA to degrees F:
Degrees F = 9.2 * mA - 1.3 ± 1.4 °F (Eqn.
To convert degrees F to mA:
mA = 0.11 * degrees F + 0.14 ± .2 mA (Eqn.
Calibration is accomplished by adjusting two potentiometers
(pots) located on the printed circuit board mounted to the front
panel. One pot (labeled G) sets the gain, while the other pot
(labeled Z) sets the zero offset. The two controls are not coupled,
that is, adjusting one does not affect the other.
Calibration should be done in a draft-free area. Drafts will
affect the accuracy of the calibration. The remote control upgrade
kit is shipped with the two pots in the "zero" position
halfway between the two extreme limits of the screw travel.
- Remove the Intellifaucet cover. While lifting the cover up,
disconnect the remote control cable from the header on the printed
circuit board and carefully snake it through while pulling the
cover up and to the left.
- Set a 16 ounce container so that the outlet of the Intellifaucet
fills the container and spills over into a drain.
- Place a reference thermometer in the 16 ounce container.
- Set the Intellifaucet for 68 degrees F. Press START.
- Wait 2-5 minutes. Read and record the reference temperature.
- Set the Intellifaucet for 102 degrees F. Press START.
- Wait 2-5 minutes. Read and record the reference temperature.
Set up a table as follows: (example values)

There are four possible cases.
Case 1: Both differences equal 0. The unit is calibrated.
Case 2: Both differences are equal, but not equal to
Rotate the Z pot approximately 0.8 degrees F per rotation.
Rotate clockwise to raise the actual temperature, counterclockwise
to lower it. Start over at Step 4 until results lead to Case
Case 3: The difference at the higher temperature is
more positive than the difference at the lower temperature.
Rotate the G pot screw clockwise up to three rotations. Start
over at Step 4 until results lead to Case 2.
Case 4: The difference at the lower temperature is
more positive than the difference at the higher temperature.
Rotate the G pot screw counter clockwise up to three rotations.
Start over at Step 4 until results lead to Case 2.
Repeat calibration as needed.
The local/remote toggle switch on the left side of the cover
is in the local temperature setpoint mode when down, and the
remote mode when up. The device connected to the start/stop line
should be held closed for a minimum of 50 milliseconds to start
or stop the flow of water. Follow the scaling equations to set
the current to obtain the correct temperature water.
The Intellifaucet generates and uses
radio frequency energy. If not installed in accordance with the
operating instructions, technical and service information, it
may interfere with radio and television reception.
The Intellifaucet has been tested and found to comply with the
limits for a Class B computing device in accordance with the
specifications in Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC Rules. These rules
are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference
when operated in a residential area. If the unit interferes with
radio or television reception, which can be determined by switching
the unit off and on, the user is encouraged to try one of these

WARNING - UNPLUG THE POWER SUPPLY FROM THE 115/230 VOLT AC POWER
BEFORE OPENING THE CASE FOR FUSE REPLACEMENT.
The Intellifaucet uses 12 volts DC in the main unit. Follow these
safety precautions when using the Intellifaucet:
- Use grounded outlet
- Do not bypass any fuses
- Do not open the case when power is applied
- Do not submerge the Intellifaucet or the power supply in

Hass Manufacturing Company (HMC) warrants the Intellifaucet
main unit, power supply and cabling against defects in materials
and workmanship for a period of Five (5) years from the date
of original retail purchase. If you discover a defect, HMC
will, at its option, repair, replace, or refund the purchase
price of the product at no charge to you, provided you return
it during the warranty period, transportation prepaid, to HMC.
Prior to returning the product for warranty consideration, call
